Veterans Could Soon Access Medical Marijuana Through VA Doctors

Veterans in Nebraska and across the country may have easier access to medical marijuana, thanks to a recent vote in the U.S. House of Representatives. In June, the House approved an amendment that would allow doctors with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to recommend medical marijuana in states where it is medically legal.
This move has been long-awaited by veterans’ advocates and medical marijuana supporters who argue that veterans deserve the same access to state-legal medical treatments as anyone else.
Why This Matters for Nebraska Veterans
Nebraska is among the growing number of states moving toward medical marijuana reform. While full implementation of a medical marijuana program has yet to begin, Nebraska voters and lawmakers continue to debate and develop a path forward. Many veterans in the state live with conditions such as PTSD, chronic pain, or other qualifying conditions.
Currently, federal law prohibits VA doctors from recommending medical marijuana, even in states where it is legal. As a result, veterans who wish to explore this option turn to third-party providers for evaluations and guidance outside of the VA system. The recent House vote could make the process even easier by allowing veterans to have these conversations directly with their VA doctors in the future.
If the House amendment eventually becomes law, it would lift that restriction and let Nebraska veterans have open, honest conversations with their VA providers about medical marijuana as a treatment option, once Nebraska’s program is fully implemented.
